Gene Elmes

Gene Oliver Elmes was born in St. Kitts in December, 1950. He was the fifth in a family of six sons. He grew up in and around Basseterre, in time attending the St. Kitts-Nevis Grammar School where he completed his secondary school education.

He later journeyed to Canada to pursue studies in architecture. He did his first degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Manitoba. During the summer folowing his graduation he travelled west across Canada to British Columbia and was captivated by the scenic views of the mountains and the ocean. When he returned to Manitoba it was to immediately pack his bags and return to Vancouver to set up residence.

While he was there he continued studies at the University of British Columbia where he earned the Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1981. It was there that he gained his early experience in an architectural design office.

During his early years he was keen on athletics. He was a sprinter and a jumper and was declared Victor Laudorum at one of his school’s annual sports meets. He was also a lover of music. He was an avid collector of musical records and learned to play the guitar. He loved to strum his guitar while serenading family members with the calypsos of the day. And he read a lot – particularly novels.

But one thing really grabbed his interest in those formative years. He had a flair for cutting bits of cardboard and gluing them together to form models of all sorts of buildings. He would become engrossed in this hobby of his and seemed happiest when he was off by himself indulging this passion. People who observed him and his models always knew that one day he would be an architect.

When he came back from Canada 1985 he established himself as a practicing architect with three of his brothers who were in allied professions and became a member of the St. Kitts and Nevis Institute of Architects.

In the early years, he served as Staff Architect at Elmes Associates, and later as Architectural Design Consultant with his firm. In the intervening years he served in the Ministry of Education as Project Manager of Civil Works under the Government’s Basic Education Project.

He was also a member of the Advisory Committee to the Whitegate Development Corporation.

The body of work which he produced ranged across all types of buildings; from institutional to commercial to residential. He used those skills to greatest effect not only for the look of the building – he was strongest on building exteriors – but also to enhance the look of a street and of a town on the whole. The Social Security Head-quarters Building in downtown Basseterre and the Hospitality Wing at the Clarence Fitzroy College also in Basseterre are high points of his legacy. H

e was a good designer who had a deep and quiet passion for his craft and for the local architectural vernacular.

He died in January, 2014, aged 64 years.

Dwayne Sturge

Mr Dwayne Alester Sturge was born on October 03, 1974 to parents Larry Caines and Jean Sturge at Branch Street, Newtown Basseterre.   He was an only child to his mother but had other siblings on his father’s side of whom he was very close to.  After his mother migrated to the us leaving him at a tender age he was raised by his aunt, Ms Boedecia Archibald (deceased),  a God fearing woman who had a very strong influence on him and instilled certain principles and set guidelines for him to live by.

He attended the Maurice Hillier Primary School where he completed his primary education, the Basseterre Junior High School and then the Basseterre senior high school where he excelled at the secondary level.

Upon completion of his secondary education he was employed by the jack tar hotel.   He however, had a dream of becoming a successful architect and decided to pursue this dream.   He applied and got accepted at FIU (Florida International University) where he successfully obtained a bachelor’s degree in architecture.

Upon completion of university Dwayne moved back to St Kitts, the country of his birth and one that he loved passionately.  He worked with Williams Architectural for a short period and then moved on to N. Brisbane & Associates in the capacity of architect where he was an associate of that firm from September, 1999 to October, 2005.   He started his own practice from November, 2005 until he passed away on December 03, 2013 at the age of 39.  He was also a member of the St Kitts-Nevis institute of architects until his passing.

Dwayne was a lover of music especially soca, hence when he was asked to join the carnival committee to spare head the Soca Monarch he willingly and gladly accepted.  He brought the Soca Monarch Competition to life with his suggestions and never ending gusto and zeal.

He was also passionate about sports.  He never missed a soccer game in the park, even if he was sick and a thunder storm was in progress as long as that game was played he was there.  He was an ardent fan of basketball, local and otherwise.  When he was asked to coach the Newtown basketball team he gladly accepted.  As he would say “that’s my way of giving back to my community”.  Don’t talk about when amercan football season was on, you could find him in the middle of the action of whatever sports bar had the biggest screen and the most noise because that was his “ting”.

Dwayne was loved by all and made an impact on everyone that passed though his life.  His never ending humor, his giving nature, his willingness to help in every way possible and he had a zest for life.

Dwayne Alester Sturge is gone in body but he lives on in our heart and will always be remembered.
